Free Pancake Breakfast!

This Saturday at the Church of the Apostles from 10 am to noon!

Released For Publication - April 26, 2022

The Helper Bees and the Urban Sugaring Project are hosting their first community meal of the year at the Church of the Apostles (86 Glasgow Street North). The community is invited to a free pancake breakfast to mark the end of the maple syrup season.

To celebrate another beautiful maple syrup season, and the culmination of the Urban Sugaring Project for 2022, the Helper Bees program and the Guelph Tool Library are hosting a free pancake breakfast this Saturday at the Church of the Apostles from 10 am to noon.

The Reverend Naomi Miller tells us that “pancakes are the perfect vehicle for enjoying maple syrup- and they are both such joyful signs of spring, and of the great goodness of the world God made.”

The Urban Sugaring project, run by the Guelph Tool Library, operates each winter and provides participants with the opportunity to tap their own maple trees and contribute to a community sap boil. This year, just over 100 trees were taped and all the sap collected was pooled and boiled down into syrup and redistributed back to the participants. Each tapper receives a share of the finished syrup based on how much sap they contributed.

Urban Sugaring Project Coordinator John Dennis said “after two long years, we are excited to gather once again as a community to enjoy a pancake breakfast!  We hope to serve 200 people on Saturday.”

Attendees can dine on fresh pancakes, bacon, and real Canadian maple syrup at the free community meal, or take their breakfast to go.

Masks are required inside of the Church of the Apostles while not actively eating or drinking.

The free pancake breakfast is also seeking volunteers to prepare and serve food, clean up, and greet guests. If you are interested in helping out, contact their project coordinator at syrup@guelphtoollibrary.org.

The Helper Bees program is an outreach project of The Church of the Apostles. Created in response to food insecurity in the community due to Covid-19; volunteers prepare meals for people in need. Since starting in March 2020, the program has prepared 15,000 meals for the community
