GUELPH TOOL LIBRARY RESTARTS REPAIR CAFE EVENTS
For the past 4 years, the organization offered bi-monthly Repair Cafés at various locations throughout the City; however, since March, due to pandemic restrictions, many of those events got canceled.
"There have been many requests by our community about starting this program again and we have been working on a plan to be able to do this safely"
says the Repair Café Coordinator, Saba Saneinejad.
Through funding from The Canadian Red Cross and the Guelph Community Foundation through the COVID-19 Community Support Program funded by the Federal Government and the City of Guelph Emergency Fund, the organization is now able to deliver the broken items to the volunteer fixers, where they can work on the items at the safety of their homes.
Repair Cafes are events where people can bring their broken items such as small home appliances, electronics, clothing, bikes, jewelry, etc. and have them fixed by volunteer fixers, and learn how the fixing is done. "We are excited to be able offer this service for our community again and even though the social part of it will be missing, we'll try to continue the educational part of it virtually, and we are happy to be able to continue diverting waste from the landfill" says Saneinejad.
This program will run until end of July and the plan is to process 60 items by then. Please visit the Guelph Tool Library website to find out how to participate in this program.
