The Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour, along with the Honourable Bill Morneau, Minister of Finance, recently announced that Ryerson University will lead the Future Skills Centre – Centre des Compétences futures (FSC-CCF) consortium. The April 17th event in Guelph brought together the business owners, colleges and universities as well as employment resource workers to learn about the ways this forward thinking research centre will prepare Canadians for the workforce opportunities of the future.
Together with Magnet and Orbis Communications, The Future Skills Centre – Centre des Compétences Futures will test and rigorously measure innovative approaches to identify emerging in-demand skills, and help Canadians develop the skills they need to take full advantage of and succeed in the new economy. Funded by the Government of Canada’s Future Skills Program, the Future Skills Centre is a forward-thinking research centre with a focus on how best to prepare Canadians today for workforce opportunities of the future.
Joining MP Longfield for a panel discussion were Devin Grady, Managing Partner, Orbis Communications Inc., JP Giroux, National Director, Skills and Talent Development, Excellence in Manufacturing Consortium (EMC), Melanie Wright, Interim Executive Director, Future Skills Centre, Roxanne Rose, Vice President of Global Human Resources, Linamar and was moderated by Mark Patterson, Executive Director, Magnet.
With Guelph having the lowest unemployment rate in the country it was especially important for business and academia alike to have the knowledge and tools available to them to fill the jobs of today and the future in order to build the local and national economy.
The government of Canada is working to make it easier for you to hire the people you need – with the talent you need – through the Global Skills Strategy; through programs that allow Canadians to upgrade their skills; and by leveraging immigration to ensure that there are enough skilled workers to fill the job vacancies created by the retirement wave.

Key Facts: The Government of Canada is investing $225 million over four years, and $75 million per year thereafter, in Future Skills.
The Future Skills Centre will be a pan-Canadian research centre that will operate in both official languages, at arm’s length from the Government of Canada.
