GUELPH, Ontario – Linda Busuttil, the trustee for Wards 2, 3, and 4 in the City of Guelph, was re-elected as Chair of the Upper Grand District School Board at the Inaugural meeting of the Board on December 4, 2018.

This is Busuttil’s second time elected as Chair. Busuttil was first elected as a trustee in 2006. She has served as Chair of the Board, Vice-Chair and Chair of numerous committees including Business Operations, Negotiating Steering, Audit, Property, and Strategic Planning.

In her address to the Board, Busuttil thanked her fellow trustees for the opportunity to provide leadership for another year. She also expressed gratitude to the UGDSB’s Director of Education Martha Rogers and senior staff for the inspiring leadership they provide to the Board.

“As trustees we are the advocates and stewards of public education. In the UGDSB we have a strong sense of direction and purpose. We have created a Strategic Plan that reflects our values and priorities and have worked closely with Director Rogers and our senior staff to create bold goals and an operational plan that sets forth accountability for the Board,” said Busuttil. “It will continue to be our responsibility to ensure that the vision expressed in this plan reflects our education values and is realized.”

Trustee Mark Bailey, who represents Wards 1 and 5 in the City of Guelph, was elected to serve as Vice-Chair.

The positions are for a one-year term ending November 30, 2019.

At the Inaugural meeting, the Board welcomed new trustees Jolly Bedi (Guelph Ward 6 and Puslinch), Jen Edwards (Guelph/Eramosa, East Garafraxa and Erin), Mike Foley (Guelph Wards 2, 3, and 4), Robin Ross (Wellington North, Minto, Mapleton), and Gail Campbell (Orangeville).

Trustees were also named to the Board’s various committees. Trustee Lynn Topping will serve as Program Committee Chair for the next year, with Trustee Barbara Lustgarten-Evoy serving as Vice-Chair. Trustee Martha MacNeil will continue the role of Business Operations Committee Chair, with Trustee Campbell serving as Vice-Chair.

Trustee Busuttil will serve as a director on the Ontario Public School Board Association’s (OPSBA) Board of Directors. The organization is routinely called on by the provincial government for input and advice on legislation, labour negotiations and the impact of government policy directions.

The final meeting of the 2017-2018 Board preceded the Inaugural meeting. The Board thanked outgoing Trustees Susan Moziar, Bruce Schieck, Marty Fairbairn, Kathryn Cooper and Barb White for their 78 cumulative years of service, their passions and strengths and their dedication to the students and families of the Upper Grand. Trustees also expressed their appreciation to the media for coverage of education issues during the past year and for their continued co-operation and help broadcasting school bus information on inclement weather days during the school year. They expressed their appreciation to Director Rogers for her co-operation and assistance over the past year and to all staff for their loyalty and dedication.
