For Immediate Release - March 18, 2021

Corey Johnson returns to the Guelph Nighthawks after a career season with the Leicester Riders in the British Basketball League (BBL). A 6’5 guard that can shoot, pass and drive, Johnson has large growth potential at only 24 years old.

During his freshman season at Harvard University, Johnson helped lead the Harvard Crimson to a 14-15 record, going 6-8 in the Ivy League to end up in fourth place. Johnson averaged almost 10.0 points per game with 40 percent from three, while setting a Harvard freshman record with 74 threes, the third most three pointers made total in the program history. In his second season, he averaged 8.0 points per game and 3.0 rebounds, and led Harvard with 19 points in the Ivy season finale, to give the Crimson the number one seed in the Ivy League competition. During his four years with the Crimson, Johnson played in 105 games, averaging 24.4 mins per game and scoring 7.2 points per game.

Johnson began his international career while still in high school, being selected for the U18 Canadian team, winning silver at the 2014 FIBA Americas. In 2015, he was selected to the U19 Canadian team, and helped the team go 6-1, finishing fifth at the FIBA U19 World Championships, the highest ever finish for Canada at the event.

Professionally, Johnson signed his first contract with Zornotza ST in the Spanish LEB Plata, averaging 10.6 points per game over 15 games. Johnson then signed with the Leicester Riders in the British Basketball League, where he scored a season high 32 points with 4 assists in the BBL championship game. During the 2020 CEBL Summer Series with the Nighthawks, he averaged 2.4 points per game over seven games. Johnson returned to the BBL, where he helped lead the team to a 16-3 league-leading record, averaging 11.3 points per game.

The CEBL led the NHL, NBA and later the CPL in returning to play in Canada after the coronavirus shut down the sports world in March of 2020. The CEBL Summer Series put professional basketball on the television and digital screens of millions of viewers across Canada and around the world, establishing the league as the top Canadian-based global team sports brand. The 2021 season set to start on June 5, will build on that momentum with an expanded viewing audience around the world, and locally through an innovative approach to addressing the uncertainties due to the pandemic around having fans in arenas across the league.
