Climate Strike Week Sept 20 - 27th

Local Climate Coalition Issues "Climate Strike Bus Pass" for Climate Strike Week

 For Immediate Release - September 17, 2019

The Guelph Wellington Climate Coalition invites everyone in Guelph to join the Climate Strike Week activities from September 20-27th. Climate Strike Week starts with a rally at Guelph City Hall at noon on Friday, September 20th. This rally is in response to Greta Thurnberg’s call for a global week of action to combat the looming climate crisis. Students from the University of Guelph will leave classes at 11am and march to Guelph City Hall for the rally.

There are approximately 30 events happening in the Guelph-Wellington region this week. Please go to www.gwclimate.ca for a full calendar of events! Activities include:

Bells for Future – Local churches will ring their bells at noon every day during climate strike week to signal the climate crisis. People can participate by setting a chime on their cell phone to ring for one minute every day at noon for one week beginning Friday Sept. 20 .

●  Let’s Talk Climate Change will happen every day from noon – 1pm at St. George’s Square beginning Saturday Sept. 21

The Coalition issued a “Climate Strike Bus Pass” and invites people to ride Guelph Transit buses for free during Climate Strike Week. Ruth Szaefer, a leader with Fridays for Future Guelph explains:

“Usually a strike means workers leave their jobs and sometimes this means services to the public are denied. However, with the undeniable evidence of the climate crisis we have realized that we will need an expansion of our transit service and workers– not a decrease. Our coalition decided people who support government action to reduce carbon emissions should be the ones to ‘strike’, and we are suggesting they take part by using our bus pass to seek out free public transit in Guelph for the week. The purpose of the Climate Strike Bus Pass is to support people in reducing their carbon footprint by using their car less. In order to reduce car usage to levels that will have a significant impact on emission reduction, public transit will need to expand its services and be free."

"Please note this bus pass has been issued by the GW Climate Coalition, not by the City of Guelph or Guelph Transit. "

"The ‘authority’ to use the pass will have to come from the people of Guelph themselves asserting their desire to reduce emissions by seeking free public transit. We ask people to be courteous to bus drivers, show their bus pass, and say ‘I Support Free Transit’. We also ask people to contact Mayor Guthrie and their city councillor and tell them to ‘Get On Board’ with free public transit as part of Guelph’s strategy to address the climate crisis.”

Climate Strike Bus Passes will be available at the Guelph Farmers Market on Saturday Sept. 21 and at all Climate Strike Week activities. Passes will also be available at 42 Carden Street beginning Wednesday Sept. 18. The Climate Strike Bus Pass can also be downloaded from www.gwclimate.ca

Greta Thurnberg said “I am here to say, our house is on fire... I want you to act as you would in a crisis. I want you to act as if our house is on fire.”

Join the Global Climate Strike Week and help put out the fire.
