Regional Skills Canada Competition
Upper Grand’s regional Skills Canada competition sets a new record with 358 elementary teams participating

For Immediate Release - March 19, 2019

GUELPH, Ontario – The success of the Upper Grand District School Board’s regional skills competition continues to surpass expectations, and this year promises to be bigger and better than ever.

Each year, the UGDSB coordinates a regional Skills Canada competition for students in grades 4 to grade 8. This year’s competition is the biggest yet, with 1,346 students from 57 elementary schools competing in different design challenges, such as Lego Robotics, Lego Mechanics, Character Animation, TV/Video Production, Health and Safety, Design and Build, Construction, Green Energy and Vex Robotics.

These design challenges invite the competing students to apply their knowledge of science, technology, engineering and math in an engaging, meaningful and hands-on way. This provides them with the opportunity to make the connection between what they are learning in school and possible careers in skilled trades and technologies. The event also encourages collaboration, problem solving, critical thinking, creativity, innovation, and a little friendly competition between schools.

This year’s Skills competition will take place on Thursday, April 4 at the University of   Guelph’s University Center and W.F. Mitchell Athletic Center.

EVENT DETAILS:
DATE: Thursday April 4, 2019
TIME: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
LOCATION: University of Guelph (Event Center Gym at the W.F. Mitchell Athletic Center, Peter Clark Hall at the University Center and Room 441 and 442 at the University Center)

Media are welcome to attend.
